Domaine Viticole Häremillen

Ehnen is home to around twenty active winegrowers, some of whom work as independent producers. Among them is the Domaine Viticole Häremillen. Founded in 1988 by the Mannes-Kieffer family, it was initially based in the old mill in Ehnen, from which the estate takes its name. It is an old watermill where flour was produced for the entire region. The name originally comes from Trier and is thought to be derived from ‘Domherrenmühle’ (Canons’ Mill), which belonged to the Trier Cathedral Chapter until the French Revolution.

It is rather rare for an estate not to bear the name of the owner’s family. In this case, the aim was to honour the cultural heritage

In 1996, a new, modern and functional winery was built, just a few hundred metres from the mill. The new building is equipped with state-of-the-art winemaking facilities, including stainless-steel vats fitted with a cooling system to regulate the temperature during fermentation and preserve the natural aromas of the individual grape varieties as effectively as possible.

The large vaulted cellar of the former mill, with its natural stone floor, houses the oak barrels, which are used in particular for the Pinot Noir aged as a red wine. The mill building itself has been completely renovated, and tastings have been held here since 2005. The only remnant of the past is the former waterwheel mechanism.

Tasting at our winery

The combination of respect for tradition and the natural elements with progressive methods is characteristic of our work in the vineyards and in winemaking – and this is also reflected in our winery.

The tastings take place in the mill, a former property of the Trier Cathedral Chapter, also known as the ‘Domherrenmühle’, in front of the restored mill mechanism, with the cellar featuring wooden barrels and a natural stone floor in the courtyard.

The waterwheel has been impressively restored, and the large roof areas have been fitted with solar panels, which are used to generate renewable energy.

Just a few steps away is the winery with its modern equipment, temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, and the production and bottling facilities for our sparkling wine. Here you have the opportunity to taste a particular wine and collect your orders.
