Description
Far above the Donverbach, the steep Muschelkalk cliffs of Palmberg rise into the sky. The path winds upwards over narrow, earthy trails. Once reached, the views over the wine village of Ahn and the Moselle valley are impressive. Every spring, nature lovers are drawn to the Palmberg nature reserve (Pëllembierg in Luxembourgish; Pellëm = boxwood) to admire the orchid diversity in the meadows and the unique boxwood stands. Some of the boxwood bushes are nearly 300 years old. From the white cross, a narrow path leads down through the incomparable boxwood stand. In early summer, one can discover the first orchids, especially the purple orchid (Purpur-Knabenkraut), which grows up to 80 centimeters tall. In the narrow gorge of the Donverbach, it feels like entering a primeval forest. Very little light penetrates the humid air. The stream must be crossed several times over stones in the riverbed, sometimes uphill, sometimes downhill, the path leads over large boulders and rocks. Passing scree slopes and numerous waterfalls, the scene resembles a rushing mountain stream. The narrow path winds countless times through the gorge.
